Sustainable Rivers Program at Lake Red Rock
As part of the Sustainable Rivers Program, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Iowa Department of Natural Resources and Iowa State University made adjustments at Lake Red Rock over the past few years to simulate seasonal river flow fluctuations that would have naturally occurred on the Des Moines River prior to construction of the reservoir. To determine the impacts of the intentional changes on fish populations in the river system, Graduate Assistant Erik Griffen from Iowa State University conducted a study using Lake Red Rock's Adaptive Management and Monitoring Plan. This video highlights Griffen's work and the positive outcome the flow changes have made on fish reproduction in the river...

    Wow! That's something I'd like to see, locks and dam working. I've seen a smaller one for barges one wide. I don't like that, it scares the fish away. On the big river it seems to attract fish though, especially wing dams and the backwaters. I hope to see more of it, lots to see along it's shore's.

    Remove dam impoundments starting at pool 26 and work north. Hire river rats and naturalists to clean garbage from river. We do it now for free. Remove railroads on both sides of river so there's no more pollution and derailment problems. Remove barges and department of commerce from equation. Hire biologists not wardens. This river used to be full of communities, commercial fishermen, gardeners, river rats and so much more but due to poor policies and leadership we are in a dire situation. The river has filled up with sediment and now flooding is more intense. The dams changed the composition and abundance of plants. The government agencies failed. Good luck

    What is the point of one tainter gate?

    • @USACERockIsland
      @USACERockIsland 3 года назад

      The single 84-foot Tainter gate at Peoria Lock and Dam is only a portion of the 570-foot dam used to maintain the 9-foot navigation channel on the Illinois Waterway. The other 432 feet is made up of 108 wicket gates which can be folded down into the river, when water levels permit, to allow for "open pass" navigation around the lock. The Tainter gate is used to control the river's flow when the wickets are raised and allows the Corps to maintain the 9-foot channel when water levels drop.

    • @rivercap1986
      @rivercap1986 3 года назад

      But how much of the river flow are you adjusting with it, because with a couple feet couldn't the wickets just be decided to be raised or lowered?

    • @timothyboone5003
      @timothyboone5003 3 года назад

      In the modern world of motorized vessels and a system of locks and dams, whirlpools are more a creature of myths and legend. Eddy walls still exist and can have hazardous effects upon commercial navigation. Today in the modern world lockage during high water conditions would probably rank the highest/greatest danger to safe navigation of the Mississippi River.
